Caraval by Stephanie Garber

As I am currently reading the second novel in this series, I thought I write a short review on Caraval, Stephanie Garber's first novel which I completed a little while ago.
The first in its series, Caraval is a magical masterpiece which transports its reader into this fantastical world of mystery and deception. Stephanie Garber truly excelled in creating a plot filled with twists and turns which left me reeling at the end of each chapter.

Each character is well introduced and by the end of the book as a reader, we become well versed in the traumas and trails of the main and recurring characters. The plot focuses on Scarlett, a cautious young lady who escapes her manipulative and controlling father along with her risk-taking younger sister and take part in Caraval. Caraval is an extravagant performance like circus where the characters have a choice to either take part as a contestant or just witness the performance.

Not only were the characters subject to the illusions and lies portrayed in this novel , but I was too. I was taken on this fantastic rollercoaster throughout the pages of this novel, it was so surprising to learn that this was Garber's first novel. The direction of the plot is so unpredictable, you would not be able to guess how it ends based on the first few pages.

I truly look forward to reading the remainder of this trilogy.

Completed: June 2018
