Before the Coffee gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Beautiful, simple and heartfelt. Before The Coffee Gets Cold is on my list of best and timeless reads. Pulling on my heartstrings, Toshikazu Kawaguchi has created an emotional and slow-moving read about time travel which leaves the reader questioning whether they would make the trip knowing they could not change the present.

The plot is played out in a Japanese cafĂ© called

Funiculi Funicula and I was so engrossed in the descriptive details of the setting, people and the plot of the novel that I felt as if a feature film was being played out in my mind. This was fitting given there is a Japanese movie which is based on Kawaguchi's sentimental writing.

There are four different stories which were seamlessly interwoven together;  each character had their own individual personality and reason for travelling through time yet their reasons were interconnected and complemented each other.

I loved the focus put on each characters emotional state during the novel which allowed the reader to feel connected to their pain and suffering but also their joy and happiness.

"At the end of the day, whether one returns to the past or travels to the future, the present doesn't change." I love this quote from the book as it's true. Regardless of whether we can travel into the past or the future, we can't change our present. And I love how the moral of the novel actually teaches us to change our present for the better, learning from the past and doing our best now for the future.

Written in simple, sweet language I would highly recommend this book with a cup of coffee, but make sure you finish it Before The Coffee Gets Cold.
